Soyfoods

One of the most exciting soyfoods projects this year will be to increase awareness and usage of low linolenic soybean oils. The Soyfoods Council will target key audiences such as restaurants and food operations that use oil for frying. The council will also work with the Des Moines Area Community College's Culinary Curriculum program to help them introduce soyfoods into their classes. Through the Soyfoods Communication program such as Hy-Vee, Iowa Dietics Association and the Iowa Consulting Dieticians to increase the awareness of soyfoods. In April, the council will partner with Lighten Up Iowa to promote Soyfoods Month. Staff will provide weekly information and recipes for soyfoods and will award 20 soyfoods gift baskets at the end of the month. The council will also collaborate with other Iowa ag groups to host another food editor and chef tour during the summer of 2005.

Two thousand new soy products have been launched over the past 10 years, with sales exceeding $3 billion in the U.S.
Soyfood's rising popularity is largely due to its health benefits, endorsed by the FDA (via soy health claim) and the American Heart Association.
Choices within the soyfood category now range from milk to burgers and beyond, and major U.S. food companies are teaming up with smaller soyfoods companies to capitalize on the product's potential.

The soybean checkoff program wants to encourage chefs to use a little finesse in preparing their dishes by featuring soy on their menus.
