Taiwanese visit ISA to sign letter of intent
On September 28 ISA hosted members of a Taiwan Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission visiting Iowa to see the grain crop about to be harvested and to sign letters of intent for the purchase of soy and corn products.

Over 700 ISA members provide policy input
In late July, ISA sent out its annual policy survey to more than 3,500 producer members. More than 700 producers responded with information on their priorities for legislative action in 2010. Three items rose to the top as priority issues for farmers.

Grassley talks about cap-and-trade
Senator Grassley said this week he believes cap-and-trade is the most controversial bill to come before Congress, even more than health care. Regarding a new bill expected to be introduced on Wednesday, he said, "I think we need to make sure that agriculture has one voice on this cap-and-trade legislation."

ISA moves to new building
ISA has recently moved into its new building in Ankeny, Iowa. There was no longer adequate room for staff and ISA’s many, expanding programs in the leased space used previously. One of the most noticeable features is the incorporation of a grain bin into the design of the building.

Soybean directors host Chinese soybean buyers
ISA directors John Heisdorffer and Curt Sindergard recently hosted a trade delegation of 15 Chinese soybean buyers on their farms as part of a crop tour arranged by ISA and the United States Soybean Export Council (USSEC).

EPA official praises Iowa's hypoxia reduction efforts
An EPA official has high praise for Iowa’s efforts to reduce nutrients moving to the Gulf of Mexico. “Iowa, from day one, has really taken an attitude of looking at this particular problem through the lens of ‘what can Iowans and what can Iowa agriculture do…’ to address these issues effectively,” said the director of the EPA’s Gulf of Mexico office.

ISA applauds USDA vision for land and water
Secretary of Ag Vilsack announced a new four-year $320 million Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative on Sept. 24 at a meeting of the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force in Des Moines, Iowa. “ISA is pleased to see this initiative,” said ISA President Delbert Christensen.

Gov. Culver proclaims harvest weight limit exemption
Governor Culver this week made a harvest weight proclamation that increased weights will be allowed beginning October 1 and for the duration of 60 days. The terms of the proclamation are the same as last year, allowing a 10 percent per axle tolerance for weights. The tolerance does not apply to posted roads or bridges, nor does it apply to federal interstate highways. The harvest weight proclamation is not a right by law but is made at the sole discretion of the Governor for the benefit of the state's farmers.

Animal rights fight heads to Ohio voters
At their September meeting, the ISA board of directors voted to financially support an effort in Ohio that would put future decisions about animal care systems in the hands of a 13-member board experienced in animal husbandry practices rather than to a vote of the general population. B20 performance equals ULSD
A study from Purdue University showed there is almost no statistical performance difference in semitrailer trucks using B20 and No. 2 ultra-low sulfur diesel. The study compared two 10-vehicle truck fleets with the same engines, with each fleet logging more than 1.5 million miles.
