Conference preview: Planning for the Field Edge

Conservation opportunities at the field edge will be the theme behind a breakout session for the Iowa Soybean Association’s (ISA’s) Innovation to Profit Conference.

Chris Hay, ISA senior research scientist, Anthony Seeman, senior field services lab and data manager and Brandon Iddings, field services program manager for conservation resources will be teaming up to present information to help discover different edge-of-field practices for water management, water quality, habitat and how water monitoring can be used to inform decision making.

“There are new edge-of-field opportunities that are potentially game-changing,” says Iddings.

The team will share research data, implementation information and funding available for edge-of-field practices including bioreactors, oxbow restorations, bioreactors, saturated buffers and more.

“Water quality data will show how successful these practices can be,” says Iddings. “We will talk about the importance of water monitoring – we need to know where the problem is to be able to address it and hone into that area with an edge-of-field practice.”

Attendees will also learn more about drainage water recycling. This edge-of-field practice captures excess water drained from fields and is stored to be used later in the season to irrigate crops.
