Innovation to Profit Series in Waterloo
February 1, 2024 | Kriss Nelson
Locally led, locally relevant and locally driven to deliver. Join the Iowa Soybean Association’s (ISA) Research Center for Farming Innovation (RCFI) team in Waterloo as they showcase research findings and actionable steps to improve productivity and profitability on the farm.
The Innovation to Profit Series will include a stop in northeast Iowa on Feb. 15.
“Farmers should attend to learn more about the opportunities for innovative practices they can add to their acres,” says ISA Conservation Agronomist Evan Brehm. “We will highlight RCFI opportunities that will allow them to see the positive influence conservation can add to their acres in the form of soil health, water quality and nutrient management.”
The day begins with farmer and RCFI cooperator Loran Steinlage from West Union. Steinlage is involved in ISA’s relay-crop trials and other conservation practices with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa Flood Center.
Brehm and ISA Data Analyst Anthony Martin and ISA Research Agronomist Alex Schaffer will summarize recent trial results, future trial opportunities, funding incentives and upcoming programming.
“We will discuss conservation cost-share programs from cover crops to edge-of-field practices and highlight ISA’s long-term cover crop trials and present information on relay cropping with soybeans and cereal rye,” says Brehm.
An afternoon session with Melissa Miller of the Iowa Nitrogen Initiate project will help explain to farmers, landowners and retailers how they can get involved in the project to find their maximum return to nitrogen rates for their farm.
Miller will provide an overview and recent trial results of the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative as well as 2024 trial opportunities and a chance to interact with the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator model to see how it partners with the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative data to help with nitrogen decision-making.
The Innovation to Profit meeting will be held at SingleSpeed Brewing Co., 325 Commercial St. in Waterloo, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
