Hagemann Recognized with Iowa Soybean Association Policy Champion Award

January 25, 2021

Meet all the 2021 Recipients

Hubert Hagemann of Carroll is recipient of the Iowa Soybean Association’s (ISA) Policy Champion Award.

Sponsored by Champion Seed, this award is presented to an ISA Advocate Member who actively participates in advocating for policy and regulatory issues benefiting farmers and the soybean industry. It also recognizes an individual who has a proven track record of personally engaging elected leaders on soybean-centric issues prioritized through the association’s policy development process.

Now retired from full-time farming, Hagemann was selected as the first recipient of this new award for his tireless, dedicated, and passionate advocacy of ISA policy issues impacting Iowa soybean farmers.

“It’s quite an honor to receive this award,” he said. “I’ve been involved in policy not because I wanted to receive an award, but because I believe it’s important for us in agriculture to be involved in what’s happening in Des Moines and Washington.”

Hagemann routinely pens letters to lawmakers and takes advantage of opportunities to meet and speak with his legislative representation.

After retiring from crop and livestock farming, Hagemann and his wife, Virginia, routinely attend ISA events including District Advisory Council Day and Advocate Days at the state capitol.

“If we don’t talk, lawmakers won’t hear us,” said Hagemann. “If we do talk, we have a chance. It’s important to have a one-on-one relationship with our elected leaders. People are more likely to listen to their friends than someone they don’t know.”

Advocacy work continues for Hagemann, who is serving as an ISA district 4 delegate this year and participating in ISA’s annual policy conference.
